About the Artist
Two hours and three minutes, 42 tracks, and almost none of it moves at the tempo you would expect from Justice. That is the reason this set is here. The duo said it themselves when it aired: they made it to show another side of the music they love and do not get to play in clubs or festivals, and they described it as slow, moody and heavy. If you know the catalogue, this is the set that rewards you for knowing it.
Justice are Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay, signed by Pedro Winter to Ed Banger Records, the label on which We Are Your Friends first pushed them to the front of the scene. This is their guest slot on BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix, broadcast on 17 December 2016, nine years after their debut mix for the programme and one month after their third album WOMAN ended five years of silence. It opens and closes on Jackson and His Computer Band, and in between it passes through Frank Ocean, Air, John Carpenter, Serge Gainsbourg, Prince, Tame Impala, Mort Garson and Pink Floyd before landing on their own Love S.O.S.
